In May 2022, Maybank through its subsidiary Maybank Ventures (formerly known as BinaFikir Sdn Bhd) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Wakaf Pulau Pinang (WPP), a subsidiary of Penang State Islamic Religious Council (Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Pulau Pinang, MAINPP), to introduce a comprehensive model to develop the state’s wakaf land owned by MAINPP. Maybank Ventures (MV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malayan Banking Bhd led by the founders of HouzKEY, was set up to drive social inclusion by addressing challenges around access to homeownership, via collaborations.

Since the inception of HouzKEY, the founders have had its vision trained on opening the door for those looking to own their first home by providing 100% financing with lower monthly payment. And also acknowledging the financial challenges faced by first-time homeowners, HouzKEY allows the support of the family members in their household to pool their resources and support the monthly payments.

Throughout Maybank Venture’s journey in promoting HouzKEY, MV has been well supported by partners such as Eco World Development Group Bhd, Gamuda Bhd, Sunway Bhd, Mah Sing Group Bhd and many more. Together, it has attracted more than 10,000 households in 2021 and 2022, especially those who were looking to start their homeownership journey.

The success of this collaborative model was also complemented by the digitalisation of the entire HouzKEY process via maybank2own.com, a shariah-compliant digital home financing solution, which is also the first of its kind in Malaysia, to ease the application process of first-time homeowners.

Next year, in the spirit of celebrating HouzKEY’s fifth anniversary, MV will further amplify its social agendas through collaboration with its new partners, Wakaf Pulau Pinang and PR1MA, in structuring practical solutions to meet their objectives.

Developing wakaf land

MV is also working with Wakaf Pulau Pinang in its appointment as the project advisor and financier. Under this partnership, MV will advise and establish the business strategy, funding requirements and development frameworks for wakaf land located both on Penang Island and the mainland.

The partnership aims to add value to Islamic assets by establishing a comprehensive ecosystem to encourage the development of affordable homes on wakaf land with another innovative financing solution to be offered to eligible first-time homebuyers.

An integrated, collaborative ecosystem

The way forward is to also expand M2own after it successfully acquiring over 1.5 million users and more than 8.3 million page views since its launch. The collaboration beyond banking is to establish an integrated and collaborative ecosystem with the key stakeholders such as real estate agents, solicitors, home improvement providers, sellers and developers to enable a seamless home homeownership journey.

Continue to champion social inclusion and ESG goals

Maybank Ventures has lined up campaigns that aim to cultivate social inclusion as a big part of MV’s ESG directives. One of the upcoming campaigns that will be launched in January 2023 is to reward responsible consumption and environmental consciousness in the community by rewarding a RM200 voucher to those spending less than RM100 on their electricity bill.

There will be more exciting collaborations to be announced soon with partners that embrace the same values and goals under the Maybank Sustainability Framework, which champions social inclusion in a sustainable ecosystem.

Potential partners that are interested in partnering with MV on its environmental goals can get in touch via email (m2own@maybank.com) or via its website (maybank2own.com).
