KUALA LUMPUR (June 1): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases jumped to 7,105 today after two consecutive days of decline to the 6,000 range, pushing the number of active cases to a new high of 80,474.

Another 71 deaths were recorded by the Ministry of Health (MoH) — 28 in Selangor, eight in Johor, seven in Sarawak, six in Kuala Lumpur, five in Kelantan, four in Melaka, three in Kedah, two each in Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu and Perak, and one each in Sabah, Labuan, Pahang and Penang.

This raised total fatalities linked to the coronavirus to 2,867, health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

He said 872 of the Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units, with 419 needing respiratory assistance.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor led the country again with 2,068 new cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (817), Sarawak (703), Kelantan (531) and Penang (400).

Johor registered 431 cases, Negeri Sembilan (397), Perak (387), Sabah (318), Melaka (249), Kedah (236), Terengganu (198), Pahang (190), Labuan (162), and Putrajaya (18).

Dr Noor Hisham said 6,083 recoveries were recorded in the 24 hours as of noon, raising total recoveries from the coronavirus to 496,121, or 85.6% of overall infections, which now stand at 579,462.

The ministry also identified 27 more Covid-19 clusters across the country, bringing total active clusters to 668.  

The new clusters comprise 13 workplace clusters, eight community clusters, three linked to religious activities, two linked to education institutions, and one high-risk group cluster.

They were detected in Selangor, Kelantan, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Sarawak, and Terengganu.

To date, 2,215 clusters have been detected, while 1,547 have been declared ended.
