KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 26): Malaysia's cumulative Covid-19 death toll surpassed the 25,000 mark on Saturday after 228 new fatalities were registered.

This compared with the 250 fatalities reported on the day before, and raised the nation's total coronavirus-linked deaths to 25,159, according to the Health Ministry's CovidNow website.

Of the 228 new deaths, 36 were brought-in-dead (BID) cases, raising the cumulative BID tally to 4,923.

Selangor accounted for 75 of Saturday's deaths, followed by Johor with 56 fatalities, Sabah (19), Kelantan (18), Kedah (15), Perak (14), Sarawak (nine), Penang (eight), Terengganu (four), Melaka (four), Pahang (three) and Kuala Lumpur (three).

There were no deaths reported in Perlis, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan and Labuan.

Meanwhile, the national Covid-19 death rate in the last two weeks stood at 5.8 deaths for every 100,000 people.

Penang topped the list with 14.7 fatalities for every 100,000 people, followed by Johor (11.5), Sabah (7.3) and Kelantan (6.2).

Malaysia reported 13,899 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, down from 14,554 on the previous day. These brought the country's cumulative infections to 2,185,131.

Daily Covid-19 recoveries stood at 18,704, exceeding fresh infections on Saturday. Total recoveries stood at 1,968,541.

There were 191,434 active Covid-19 cases as of midnight on Saturday. Of these, 1,070 patients were in intensive care units, of whom 598 required ventilators.
