Malaysian Meteorological Department: No tsunami threat to Malaysia but tremors felt in several states after Sumatra earthquake

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 25): The Malaysian Meteorological Department confirmed on Friday morning (Feb 25) that tremors were felt around Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor after a strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake happened in Sumatra, Indonesia at 9.39am.

"No tsunami threat to Malaysia. Tremors felt around Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.

"This is the final information issued by the department regarding the occurrence of the earthquake unless there is further development or additional information,” the department said in a 10.13am notice.

According to the department, the earthquake with a 10km depth was detected in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province at 76km north-west of Payakumbuh, which is a city in the West Sumatra province.
