KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 26): Details of the RM205.49 million Tabung Harapan donors will remain undisclosed in accordance with the law, said the Ministry of Finance.

Its first deputy minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said such information are protected under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and the Banking and Financial Institutions Act (BAFIA) 1989.

“In line with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and BAFIA, any donor information or record cannot be revealed,” he told the Dewan Rakyat here today.

"With regard to the tax issues raised, all individuals who contributed to the Tabung Harapan can apply for tax exemption, and that is up to them,” he added.

He was replying to a question by PAS’ Pasir Mas member of Parliament (MP) Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who wanted to know the current status of the fund.

Late last year, former finance minister Lim Guan Eng said the total collection of the Harapan fund amounting to RM205.49 million had been fully utilised to pay off 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) debts.

The Bagan MP had previously said a total of RM202.72 million was collected by the fund as at Jan 14, 2019, which was the deadline for accepting donations. He said the RM2.77 million difference came in the form of interest earned from the trust account where the donation was deposited.

Tabung Harapan was set up on May 30, 2018, to provide Malaysians with a platform for them to play their part in helping to ease the government's burden in dealing with national debt.
