KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 18): Former US president Donald Trump has been rushing in vain to assemble a team of defence lawyers in the aftermath of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) search of his Florida home.

In a report on Tuesday (Aug 16), the Washington Post said the struggle to find expert legal advice puts Trump in a bind, as he faces potential criminal exposure from a record dispute with the National Archives that had escalated into a federal investigation into possible violations of the Espionage Act and other statutes.

Citing an anonymous Republican lawyer, the report said: “Everyone is saying no."

The Post said long-time confidants and advisers to Trump had grown worried about the former president’s current stable of lawyers, noting that most of them had little to no experience in cases of this type.

It added that ordinarily, the prestige and publicity of representing a former president would attract high-powered attorneys.

However, it said Trump’s search is being hampered by his divisiveness, as well as his reputation for stifling vendors and ignoring advice.

According to the report, several people said Trump is nearly impossible to represent, and it is unclear if they would ever get paid.
