KUALA LUMPUR (July 20): Malaysia welcomes investments from Chinese companies if they will be “using Malaysian labour and Malaysian resources”, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The invitation will be one of Dr Mahathir’s main agenda for his upcoming visit to China in August, he told reporters at a press conference today.

“As far as I am concerened, I will invite Chinese companies to invest in Malaysia, in productive capacities in this country — using Malaysian labour and Malaysian resources,” he said.

The other agenda, said Dr Mahathir, will be to follow up on Council of Emminent Persons chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin’s progress in negotiating what were deemed lopsided contracts given out by the previous Barisan Nasional administration to Chinese firms.

Daim will also be raising “the fact that the Malaysian government cannot afford to borrow so much money” from Chinese financial institutions to fund the projects, he added.

Daim is currently in China ahead of Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s visit later this month. Dr Mahathir has previously told reporters that he will also be meeting with top leaders of the world's second largest economy in mid-August.
